I’ve made signs for Duxbury, Westhampton, lake houses in Michigan and a townhouse number in Aruba. There isn’t really a wrong answer.
What it costs
$33 per sign, plus $50 if you want the post. Minimum of three signs. Free shipping anywhere in the continental US.
Every custom sign needs its own stencil cut and its own paint run, which is why these cost more than the ready-made Aruba sign. If you only want a beach or two changed on that one, swapping is cheaper.

How it works
- 1. You tell me the names
- Message me, or order online and send the list after. Either is fine. If you’re stuck on wording or worried something won’t fit, just ask — I do this all day.
- 2. I confirm the details
- We settle the spelling, the order they go in, and the colors. I’ll flag anything that’s going to be a squeeze on a board before I cut it.
- 3. I build it and send you photos
- Two to four weeks, depending on how many signs and how backed up I am. You’ll see photos before it ships.
It looks weathered because it is
I could buy new lumber. It would be faster and a lot less work. But new wood looks new, and you can always tell — the fake-distressed signs in home stores have sanded-on scratches and printed-on “age.”
Mine doesn’t need any of that. I reclaim every board myself, mostly from pallets I track down around town and break apart by hand, pulling out every nail. Then it gets cut, sanded, hand-stenciled, painted, distressed and sealed with spar urethane.
No two are the same, and none of them look like they came out of a box.
Who makes these
Hi, I’m Tim. I make every one of these myself — no staff, no factory. When you message this page, you’re talking to the person who’s going to reclaim the wood, cut it, paint it and pack it.
I’ve never been much of a salesman. I’d rather just build you something good.
Questions
- How long can a name be?
- Longer names get a longer board or smaller lettering. “California Lighthouse” fits. A full sentence doesn’t. Send it over and I’ll tell you.
- Can I choose the colors?
- Yes. Tell me what you’re after and I’ll match it as closely as reclaimed wood allows.
- Can I order one as a gift?
- Plenty of my favorites have been gifts. Message me and I’ll help you get the places right, and I can ship it straight to them.
- Do I have to dig a hole for the post?
- You don’t have to. Plenty of people sink it in the garden, but it also drops straight into a patio umbrella table base, which is handy if you rent or want to bring it in over winter.
- How long does it take?
- Two to four weeks. Longer around the holidays, so order early if it’s a gift.
- Will it hold up outside?
- It’s sealed with spar urethane and built for outdoors. Full sun will soften the colors over a few years — somewhere with afternoon shade keeps them brightest.
