It looks weathered because it is
I could buy new lumber. It would be faster and a lot less work. But new wood looks new, and you can always tell — the fake-distressed signs in home stores have sanded-on scratches and printed-on “age.”
Mine doesn’t need any of that. I reclaim every board myself, mostly from pallets I track down around town and break apart by hand, pulling out every nail. That wood already spent years outside before it ever reached my shop. The grey in the grain is real. So are the knots, the nail holes and the splits.
Then it gets cut, sanded, hand-stenciled, painted, distressed and sealed with spar urethane. The posts are treated lumber, ripped down and painted to match.
No two are the same, and none of them look like they came out of a box.

Questions
- Which towns come as standard?
- Provincetown, Chatham, Wellfleet, Hyannis and Falmouth, with the Cape Cod sign on top. Swap any of them for the ones that are actually yours.
- How long does it take?
- About a week for the standard sign. Two to four weeks if you’re swapping towns.
- What does shipping cost?
- Nothing, anywhere in the continental US.
- Do I have to dig a hole for the post?
- You don’t have to. Plenty of people sink it in the garden, but it also drops straight into a patio umbrella table base — handy if you’re renting the house out or bringing it in over winter.
- Will it hold up on the Cape?
- It’s sealed with spar urethane and built for outdoors. Salt air and full sun will soften the colors over a few years — somewhere with afternoon shade keeps them brightest.
- How big is it?
- The top sign is about 5.5″ × 11″. Each town arrow is roughly 3.25″ × 17.5″. On the post it stands 5 feet tall.
